Walktober 2009

19th Annual Walktober Celebration

The Last Green Valley is now accepting proposals for the upcoming 19th Annual Walktober 2009 Event. Last year’s event generated more than 25,000 participants to the numerous Walks/Bikes/Paddles and Events generously hosted and lead by many of you. Plus, the media coverage was tremendous. In fact, Hartford Courant columnist, Peter Marteka, was quoted as stating that Walktober was, “one of his favorite fall events” (Jan. 30, 2009 edition).

We invite you to submit a walk, bike, paddle or event again this year, even if it has been awhile since you last participated, or even if it is for the first time. We would like you to think of catchy names and to repeat your same offering no more than two times throughout the month. Otherwise, re-formulate your previous Walk/Bike/Paddle or Event to provide a fresh take on the original version. We would also appreciate your flexibility in providing these opportunities during the week, as well as on the weekends. For example, last year’s Jewett City Vampire Walk boasted more than 80 attendees on a Thursday morning. Please take into consideration that we may need to move your offering to a different time or day during the month to balance and coordinate it with others in close proximity to yours (we will contact you well in advance to make arrangements).

All Walks/Bikes/Paddles must be free of charge, guided, and open to the public. The Events portion of Walktober may charge an admission fee if they choose to do so. Offerings should adhere to the mission and goals of The Last Green Valley, which strives to interpret our heritage, celebrate our agricultural and natural resources, and be a fun and informative venue for our residents and visitors alike who want to explore and learn more about our beautiful region.

All Leaders must attend one of the “Kick-Off Parties” in September (dates, times, and locations to be determined), in order to receive your signs, brochures, informative packets, and to meet and share past Walktober stories with one another (Events are also invited to attend). It is imperative that each offering provide a Back-up Leader/Person in charge, to be available should the Primary Leader/Person in charge have an unexpected situation arise preventing them from leading the walk, bike or paddle.

Please return your signed and completed forms no later than May 8, 2009, and please feel free to make as many copies of the forms as needed. Please call Michelle Bourgeois at 860-774-3300 with any questions or concerns you may have. Thank you for considering your participation in Walktober 2009!
